![]() ![]() So the Acer was then put aside pending a check-in with Bleeping Computer. My concern was then raised regarding a possible Rootkit infection. ![]() Then got back into BIOS, had a good look around, and could not find any setting that would explain the popup message. I forced shutdown and tried again, though this time a BIOS message popped up - I recall something like not booting this usb due to security setting. From memory I then tried an AVG package once and at least seemed to think about booting, though from memory then hung. I tried a couple of the usb packages though would not boot. On the Acer, I then switched boot sequence to favour usb over hard drive (Win 8.1), and went to it. I then researched bootable usb packages downloadable from the Internet, that are specifically for rescuing / malware detection / rookit detection etc, and created some related usb’s. So in a precautionary way, I sorted out a small old notebook on Win 10 that would serve as a backup machine, while the Acer was under investigation. I then thought I would delve a little deeper re possible malware. So I then ran a series of scans on the Acer laptop - from memory I ran Malware Bytes, ESET online, Bitdefender, Avira all from within Windows - nothing of any material significance found - I did not save any logs at the time. ![]() And I successfully did another to an additional external hardrive as well. A very slow running backup to an external hardrive, and then bounce save from that external hardrive to another external hardrive - caused me to suspect maybe something not right - I wished to start with Malware check on the laptop first. In January 2019, I suspected maybe some sort of Malware infection. ![]() I have an Acer Aspire V5-573G, Intel i5-4200U 1.6GHz, running Windows 8.1. ![]()
